Comfort

Somehow, this was comforting after last week.

It turns out that Jeremy's friend was actually in the building when it happened, and a co-worker's son was, too. Both made it out safely...I don't think I can express the right words, especially in a blog for all the world to see. I can say how thankful I am that my brother graduated years ago & that my father-in-law retired. It was sad to see a few members of the media go right for the throat of the administration, demanding answers, out of anger--but it inspired and comforted me to see the entire community of Hokies come together.

I'll certainly keep my thoughts and prayers on them all.

Hokies

I'm still in shock. Just over an hour away is Virginia Tech.. I've been there many times, my brother is an alum, many friends, too; my father-in-law worked there for 30+ years, and my husband spent a good deal of time on campus, too. So close, but it's still just so unreal. Every news cast I see, they have the big VT sign up, and I think twice-- it's surely not the VT I've ever been.

Here's a video of one of Jeremy's old neighbors, today at the memorial service: Nikki Giovanni.

I cannot express the feelings of sympathy I feel for the students, the families, the school, our nation. I will certainly keep them in my thoughts and prayers, won't you?

Doll Quilts and New Blogs

Some folks are really getting into Doll Quilts, eh? Wee Wonderfuls, Misadventures of Mamma and Jack, and Turkey Feathers. I think it's a fantastic idea. You need very little fabric, but get to try so many patterns without having a huge committment of time. If I ever need a nursery for a little girl, I would definetely want to do a room like this (that seems to be the original inspiration). I found a doll quilt of my own recently... the fabrics are a little faded, but I love it!

Here are some of my favorites made by other crafters:
Chicken Quilt
Quilt for a Wee One
Fresh Tradition
Lady Bug
Green Dot
Red Dot by Vicki
First Doll Quilt by Mamma and Jack
Red Posie

Gets ya thinking, doesn't it? If you've seen some great doll quilts, would you mind leaving me a comment with a link?

Some other blogs I'm sure you'll enjoy visiting:

Fresh Vintage - she really finds some great stuff at yard sales and such. Makes me really hope the weather clear up soon... spring yard sales are too much fun!

Vingage Pretties- I really enjoy her Inspiration Fridays. Lots of great ideas ....

My Many Colored Crayons- I especially enjoy this blog because she is a teacher. I love that she's given each kid a nickname so that she can write about them. Great ideas.

Petite Anglaise- As I've discovered, there are many of us who wish we lived in Paris. She does! I randomly discovered her blog because of an article I'd read. Unfortunately, because of her blogging at work, she lost her job... You can read the longer version of the story here. Glad Blogger's blocked at work -- not that I would blog at work :) !

Bluelines- A blog with Martha's stamp on it? You can't go wrong with that! Very practical stuff.

All's Quiet Here...

I realize I haven't posted in over a month! I have to admit I've been visiting many other blogs, but haven't found much to say myself. We enjoyed about a week or 2 of spring-ish weather, but then had to rehibernate about 2 weeks ago when wintery weather returned.

We did enjoy a week off work, deciding to stay home rather than travel. We did some projects here and there, including painting the living room and back porch, (planted 3 dwarf fruit trees in planters, and I envision hanging some vintage-looking, colorful tin cans with some plants-- it's hard to do something fun with a big concrete wall!)

and enjoyed a day of warm weather on the river...

It was just lovely.

We even visited Busch Gardens, even though it was snowing and freezing! I wouldn't recommend it, even though the lines were shorter.

And to wrap up our vacation, we had my family over for Easter.

I spent the entire day in the kitchen, and forgot to take pictures beyond this torte, which looks like it's about to fall over, but it was realllllly delicious.

The warm weather is supposed to return next weekend. We can't wait to go outside and play!

I hope you are all well!
